The Amazing Pop Corn Review By: Digital Storytime

Pop Cornelius stars in this adorable book app from Ever After Tales, based on the story by Eugene Trivizas. Cornelius, a pop-corn “kid”, wants to grow up to be a pop star, so he forms a band with his pop-corn friends. Featuring an original and very catchy song, “Pippy Pippy Pop”, this story app will have young readers and listeners bopping along to the charming story. Overcoming obstacles, working hard and sticking with his dream brings many rewards for this young “pop” star.

Lovely narration is available, in a North American accent, although the storyline and spelling have a distinctive British theme (like when Pop Cornelius is invited to tea with the Queen at Popingham Palace). Fun dialogue will enchant readers of all ages, including lots of tongue-in-cheek jokes for the older crowd, like when the Queen mentions the ‘popression’ of pop-corns in the cinema. There is even a love story with Princess Pepita, leading to a pleasing, happily-ever-after ending.

This title is heavy on text, although it is perfect for the picture book audience in “read to me” mode. At times it feels almost like a cartoon, with appealing graphics and animated scenes that will entice young readers. Read myself mode includes great interactive sound effects, although they can easily be turned off too, for truly silent reading. These interactive features are usually story related and when not, they are musical in nature. There is no highlighting, but the text is in a large, easy-to-read font. Ample settings include sound and text controls, page guide and home button for easy navigation.Language options include Greek, Spanish and English, all available in-app.

Two games and a drawing contest are included in addition to the storybook within this app. First up is a puzzle game with 6, 12 and 20 piece versions of several scenes from the book. A few coloring pages are also included in the 2nd ‘game’, alongside a blank page for creative expression. The final extra is an invitation to post hand-drawn artwork, based on the characters in the story, to the company’s facebook page (Note: A very simple ‘parental gate’ links to Facebook that requires fluent reading of numbers). Overall this app is well-produced with a polish that makes it a seamless reading experience with lots of options. Experienced with or without an adult, this title will please parents, teachers and librarians with its solid story, thoughtful production values and quality engagement. Recommended!
